Discover the Enchanting Lion Grove Garden – A Maze of Art and History
Step into the timeless charm of the Lion Grove Garden (狮子林), one of Suzhou’s Four Famous Classical Gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built in 1342 during the Yuan Dynasty, this exquisite garden was designed as the spiritual retreat of Buddhist monk Tianru Weize to honor his master. Its name derives from the lion-shaped rocks scattered throughout the grounds and the Buddhist concept of the "Lion’s Roar".
Covering 1.1 hectares, Lion Grove Garden is best known for its intricate rockeries made of Taihu stones, forming a maze-like wonderland of over 21 caves and 9 winding paths. These artistic rock formations resemble dancing lions, earning the garden the title of “Kingdom of Rockeries.”

Highlights include:
-
🏯 Yan Yu Hall (燕誉堂): The main hall used for banquets, showcasing traditional Suzhou “Mandarin Duck Hall” architecture.
-
🌸 Wen Mei Pavilion (问梅阁): A serene spot surrounded by wintersweet trees that blossom during winter.
-
🚤 Stone Boat (不系舟): A symbol of detachment and philosophical retreat, juxtaposed against the dramatic artificial mountains.
-
🪴 Ancient Five Pines Garden (古五松园): A tranquil setting decorated with scholarly artworks and calligraphy.
Lion Grove Garden has been a favorite destination for emperors, most notably Emperor Qianlong, who visited six times and left poems and plaques. From refined architecture and cultural symbolism to natural harmony, this garden offers a vivid experience of Chinese garden art.
